According to figures based on the 2024 Boone, IA event (post-show attendee survey, advance ticket sales, cover wraps, and mailers): 92% of attendees come to see new products and practices for the farm or ranch, and 95% of attendees are farm owners, operators, and managers, traveling from more than 44 states. History

The Farm Progress Show traces its origins to 1953, when Prairie Farmer magazine (a flagship of Farm Progress Companies) joined forces with WLS-Radio in Chicago to create a field day where farmers could see first-hand the progress being made in farming equipment, seed varieties, and ag chemicals. The first show took place on October 2, 1953, on the Earl Bass farm in Armstrong, Illinois, drawing more than 75,000 visitors and featuring equipment, demonstrations, sheepdog trials, a fiddlers' contest, and the WLS Barn Dance.

Over the decades the show evolved to include seed test plots and field demonstrations. The 2005 show marked the first at its permanent biennial Decatur, Illinois, site, hosting more than 500 exhibitors, and the Decatur site was expanded for 2007 to host more than 600 exhibitors and record visitor numbers. A second permanent biennial site was later established near Boone, Iowa, and the show now rotates between the Decatur and Boone locations, both designed as long-term, weather-resistant facilities for the nation's largest outdoor farm show.
