The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) was founded in 1947 as the American Academy of General Practice, changing its name in 1971 to reflect the evolving and expanding scope of primary care as medicine's 20th recognized specialty. Since its founding, the AAFP has convened its members at an annual meeting — originally known as the Scientific Assembly — to provide continuing education and conduct governance through the AAFP Congress of Delegates, which meets immediately before the conference each year and holds sole authority to establish organizational policy.
Over the decades, this annual gathering grew and evolved into the Family Medicine Experience (FMX), now recognized as the only professional conference dedicated exclusively to the family medicine specialty in the United States. The AAFP, which today represents more than 128,300 family physicians and medical students across all 50 states and U.S. territories, uses FMX as its flagship annual event for CME, networking, leadership development, and industry partnership. The conference has been held in major cities across the country, with FMX 2026 bringing the event back to Nashville, Tennessee.
