Association for Asian Studies - AAS 2027

The AAS Annual Conference is the largest gathering of its kind. The conference brings together over 3,600 Asian studies scholars from across the globe. The AAS Annual Conference is the association's premier event with over 3,300 attendees, hundreds of sessions, unlimited networking opportunities, and a book exhibition. The parent organization is substantial: the Association for Asian Studies is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional association open to all persons interested in Asia and the study of Asia, with approximately 7,000 members worldwide, representing all the regions and countries of Asia and all academic disciplines, making the AAS the largest organization of its kind.

Registration opens ahead of the conference. Registration and hotel reservations will open in mid-September. To register: you must first either log in to your AAS account or create an account; once logged in, select the upcoming events menu and choose the AAS 2027 Annual Conference, then select the register now button, which takes you to the registration page where your name will display with your membership status, and click continue to begin completing the registration form.

Rates depend on membership type. On the registration fee page you will see the conference rate you qualify for based on your membership type (regular member, retired member, student member, K-12 educator member, librarian member); non-members will see the non-member rates (non-member, student non-member).

Key deadlines:

• Early bird expires on October 20.
• Regular rates are available October 21 through February 5, and late registration rates are available February 6 through March 21, 2027.
• On-site registration opens on Thursday, March 18, 2027 at 9:00 am and is located in the Hynes Convention Center.

The AAS has a long institutional history. The AAS was founded in 1941, originally as publisher of the Far Eastern Quarterly (now the Journal of Asian Studies). It has gone through a series of reorganizations to serve better the broadening disciplinary and geographical interests of its membership. In 1970 four elective area Councils—South Asia (SAC), Southeast Asia (SEAC), China and Inner Asia (CIAC), and Northeast Asia (NEAC)—were established to guarantee each area constituency its own representation.

The Annual Conference rotates among North American cities each spring. Traditionally, the geographic locations are based in North America with an east, west, and central rotation, including Canada. Recent host cities include Vancouver, B.C. (2026), Columbus, OH (2025), Seattle, WA (2024), and Boston, MA in 2023 at the Hynes Convention Center and Sheraton. The 2027 meeting marks a return to Boston.
