The Association of Academic Physiatrists was founded in 1967, growing out of an effort by Ernest W. Johnson, MD, to keep physical medicine and rehabilitation represented within the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). After writing to some 20 program directors about the need for an organization of teachers and researchers in PM&R, the group formed and unanimously adopted the name Association of Academic Physiatrists, electing William Erdman, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania as its first president. Initial annual dues were $25 the first year and $15 thereafter. From those modest beginnings the AAP has grown into an organization representing roughly 3,000 members worldwide, and its Annual Meeting — branded in recent years as 'Physiatry' with the two-digit year — has become the specialty's flagship academic gathering.
