Based on that milestone, the show dates to the late 1990s. It is organized by IDEAg Group, LLC, based in Eagan, Minnesota. Over the years the show has grown into a major regional gathering, drawing hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors to Mitchell each August.

Dakotafest takes place on the Schlaffman Farm, an open outdoor show site in Mitchell that hosts hundreds of exhibitor spaces, demonstration areas and family activities. Golf cart reservations can be made by calling NB Golf Car at 605-275-4653, and carts are also rented on site on a first come, first served basis; personal golf carts are not allowed on show grounds.
Mitchell sits along Interstate 90 in southeastern South Dakota, making the show grounds easily reachable by car. On-site golf cart rentals are available to help attendees move around the large show grounds.

Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD) is about 65 miles east of Mitchell and offers the most flight connections, roughly a 70-minute drive. Huron Regional Airport (HON) is the closest airport at about 48 miles north. Renting a car is the most practical way to reach the show.
