• SPIE Student Members are encouraged to apply for supplemental travel grants and fee waivers to attend Medical Imaging.
• SPIE Family Care Grants are designed to supplement caregiving costs incurred by SPIE Members who are registered to attend an SPIE meeting.

The SPIE Medical Imaging symposium began fifty-two years ago (approximately 1972) as the Application of Optical Instrumentation in Medicine. The meetings celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2022 and are recognized as one of the premier international conferences for presenting and learning about advances in medical-imaging research.

Over the decades the symposium has grown into a collection of specialized conferences. For example, the Computer-Aided Diagnosis conference reached its 16th anniversary in 2022, having grown out of tremendous interest in computer-aided diagnosis in biomedical imaging in the 1990s and early 2000s; prior to that, CAD papers were included in the Image Processing, Biomedical Applications, PACS, and Perception conferences. The Imaging Informatics conference was initially established as a digital radiology conference focused on picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) and has since evolved into a multidisciplinary field serving radiologists, IT support, health informaticists, care providers, data scientists, and other healthcare professionals.
