SIOR traces its origins to the early 1940s. Founded in 1941 (in answer to the U.S. War Department's request for assistance to locate industrial facilities), SIOR maintains a commitment to business and industry by providing outstanding professional services, publications, and educational programs. Over 200 brokers from across the United States and Canada surveyed suitable facilities and reported their findings to the War Department (now the Department of Defense). These 200 brokers would become the Society's charter members.

The organization began as the Society of Industrial Realtors (SIR) before evolving into the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. SIOR expanded outside of North America in the 2000s through leadership's committed focus on establishing a global network of transaction professionals. Membership continued to grow outside of the US and Canada, and SIORs in Europe established SIOR's first Chapter, the European Regional Council, outside of North America. Today there are more than 3,400 members in 42 countries.

SIOR now holds semi-annual global events each spring and fall; the 2026 Fall Event in New York coincides with the Society's 85th anniversary.
