The AMI Conference & Expo grew out of the association's long-running industry event, formerly known as the International Marina & Boatyard Conference (IMBC). AMI was formed in 2005 from the merger of two industry bodies, the Marina Operators Association of America (MOAA) and the International Marina Institute (IMI). MOAA was formed in 1992 by a small group of marina industry owners and managers to build and advocate a domestic legislative and regulatory agenda for the industry, while the International Marina Institute was founded in 1986 by Neil Ross, Paul Dodson, and Dennis Nixon out of concern over the lack of professional training opportunities in the marina industry.
Today the organization has grown significantly. The association supports over 1,000 members worldwide, representing marinas, boatyards, yacht clubs and moorage facilities that accommodate more than 240,000 recreational watercraft and employ over 13,000 marine tradespeople. The annual Conference & Expo has become the premier gathering for the North American marina and boatyard sector, and the 2027 edition marks 25 years of the show.
