The convention draws the wider American Legion Family. Annually, about 9,000 members of The American Legion Family attend the National Convention, which includes the conventions for The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of The American Legion, as well as The American Legion Riders Legacy Run. The most recent prior edition, the 106th convention in Tampa, Florida, in 2025, brought 7,593 attendees, generated more than $20.8 million in local economic impact, and used 15,577 hotel room nights.
Registration for The American Legion National Convention is handled through department (state) headquarters rather than directly by individuals.
On-site registration and information hours are published on the official convention resource page ahead of the event. For general questions, the Legion's convention office can be reached at (317) 630-1292.
The American Legion was founded in 1919, with early caucuses in Paris in March and St. Louis in May of that year. Its first national convention was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from November 10 to 12, 1919, attended by 684 delegates, where the organization adopted its constitution and preamble and made foundational decisions such as selecting Indianapolis as its permanent national headquarters. The convention has been held annually since, evolving into the organization's largest yearly gathering and the venue for electing national leadership and setting policy. The 2026 Louisville event is the 107th American Legion National Convention (and the 105th for the American Legion Auxiliary).
The 107th American Legion National Convention takes place August 28 to September 3, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. Business sessions and events are centered at the Kentucky International Convention Center in downtown Louisville.
It draws the American Legion Family — members of The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of The American Legion, plus participants in the American Legion Riders Legacy Run. About 9,000 members of the Legion Family attend the convention each year.
Attendees register through their department (state) headquarters rather than directly, and delegate and alternate registration opens in August. Department headquarters also handle official convention lodging, and on-site registration hours are published on the official convention page.
Delegates approve changes to the constitution and bylaws, pass programs, set dues, and elect a national commander and national vice commanders. Attendees also participate in commission meetings, workshops, training sessions, award presentations, band and color guard contests, and hear from distinguished guests.
The Kentucky International Convention Center is less than eight miles from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, with taxi and rideshare service available. Two on-site garages, Commonwealth and Cowger, offer more than 1,300 spaces at up to about $12 per day, and the Legion runs a convention shuttle between official hotels and the center.
