The American Legion National Convention 2026

The convention draws the wider American Legion Family. Annually, about 9,000 members of The American Legion Family attend the National Convention, which includes the conventions for The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of The American Legion, as well as The American Legion Riders Legacy Run. The most recent prior edition, the 106th convention in Tampa, Florida, in 2025, brought 7,593 attendees, generated more than $20.8 million in local economic impact, and used 15,577 hotel room nights.

Registration for The American Legion National Convention is handled through department (state) headquarters rather than directly by individuals.

1. Contact your department headquarters to register and to secure convention lodging; department hotel assignments are posted on the legion.org convention page under Information for Attendees.
2. Delegates and alternates complete delegate and alternate registration, which opens in August.
3. The housing block cut-off is typically noted per hotel (in prior guidance, blocks were held until a mid-August cut-off date or until sold out).

The American Legion was founded in 1919, with early caucuses in Paris in March and St. Louis in May of that year. Its first national convention was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from November 10 to 12, 1919, attended by 684 delegates, where the organization adopted its constitution and preamble and made foundational decisions such as selecting Indianapolis as its permanent national headquarters. The convention has been held annually since, evolving into the organization's largest yearly gathering and the venue for electing national leadership and setting policy. The 2026 Louisville event is the 107th American Legion National Convention (and the 105th for the American Legion Auxiliary).
