Conference on College Composition & Communication - CCCC 2027

CCCC is described as the oldest and largest conference of NCTE. Established in 1949, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, or CCCC, is the oldest and largest conference of NCTE with roughly 5000 members. CCCC sponsors an annual convention in the spring that typically attracts 3,000–3,500 participants. Its audience is primarily college and university writing instructors, composition and rhetoric researchers, program administrators, and graduate students. More recently, NCTE reported CCCC had approximately 2,500 members in 2026.

Registration is handled through NCTE, the organization that manages the convention. Convention registration fees are kept intentionally low, with reduced rates for graduate students, adjuncts, retirees, and veterans. The registration fee is $240 for CCCC members, substantially less for grad students and adjuncts/retirees/veterans, which compares favorably to other national association conferences whose registration costs are generally upward of $300. A range of funding programs also supports attendance: CCCC offers programs including the Assistance Fund for Contingent Faculty ($750 grants), the Professional Equity Project for adjuncts, Scholars for the Dream awards, and Tribal College awards. CCCC traces its origins to a 1949 gathering of college English educators. On April 1 and 2, 1949, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) sponsored the inaugural conference at the Stevens Hotel in Chicago, drawing over 500 educators to discuss issues in college freshman English, including course organization, research, articulation between high school and college curricula, teaching methods, and staffing needs. With over 500 attendees, the conference was so successful that CCCC officially became a major organization within NCTE; organizer John C. Gerber requested recognition, and after NCTE's approval, CCCC held a luncheon meeting in Buffalo, New York on November 25, 1949. Over the following decades it grew into the field's flagship annual convention. Milwaukee had previously been selected to host in 2020, but the 2020 convention in Milwaukee was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2021 and 2022 conventions were moved to virtual events.
