The organization was established on January 20, 1896, as the Fraternity of Operative Millers of America (FOMA), with Benjamin W. After nearly 25 years, FOMA was reorganized as the Association of Operative Millers (AOM) in 1919. The association celebrated its Golden Anniversary at its 50th international conference in Chicago in 1946 and its 100th Anniversary at its 100th conference in Minneapolis in 1996.
