Shed Builder Expo has roots dating back more than 20 years, tracing to when Tom Merkert with Capital Forest Products in Annapolis, MD launched ISM Expo (International Shed Manufacturers) around 2011. Capital Forest Products was a frequent exhibitor at numerous building and lumber tradeshows and decided to create a similar event for shed manufacturers, with Merkert's goal being to hold an event where lumber mills could interact directly with shed manufacturers from across the eastern half of the country.
Sometime later, Mo Lunsford with Union Grove Lumber launched a customer appreciation event that evolved into building material manufacturers and suppliers exhibiting during his event. Later on, these two events combined into one and, shortly after, Shed Business Journal (formerly Shed Builder Magazine) took over and rebranded the event as Shed Builder Expo. In 2026, Shed Builder Expo will be hosted in Knoxville, Tennessee for the second consecutive year.
